The short answer

California’s knowledge test is multiple choice and draws its questions from the California Driver’s Handbook. The DMV says each question has one correct answer and two choices that are obviously wrong or do not fit the question. Use practice to learn the rules, then confirm application-specific instructions with the DMV.

What the format means for you

Read the whole question before looking for a familiar phrase. Find the condition that matters—such as a sign, signal, road user, or visibility issue—then choose the answer that follows the handbook. The DMV says there are no “trick questions.” If two options sound cautious, decide which one actually answers the situation described.

What to know about another attempt

The California Driver’s Handbook says original driver’s-license applicants have three attempts to pass before they must reapply. Minors must wait seven days after a failed knowledge test, not counting the day of the failure. Application and testing details can depend on your situation, so check the DMV’s current instructions before scheduling or returning.

A practical study routine

Start with the current California Driver’s Handbook and give yourself a few days to work through it. Then use the DMV’s official sample knowledge tests to get familiar with example questions. After each answer, explain the rule in your own words and note the handbook section for anything you missed or guessed. A fresh mixed practice session can help you see whether you can apply the idea to a different example.

Keep practice separate from the official exam

Independent practice questions—including ours—are study materials, not California DMV exam questions or an official answer bank. The DMV says testing aids such as a handbook or cell phone are not allowed during a knowledge test. If you miss a question at a field office, the employee can point you to the handbook page with the correct information. Review that source instead of trying to memorize a remembered answer.

Try a short California review

Use California permit practice questions with explanations, then try a timed practice simulator without hints. These are independent learning tools; their question count, timer, and practice threshold do not represent the DMV’s test settings. Finish by checking your weak topics against the official handbook.
